Description: The Baldy Sanders Collection contains records of slaves and plantation operations from 1830 to 1868, with slave birth records dating to 1774.

Description: The Catch-Me-Eye Collection contains pictures of the site of a munitions truck explosion near Selma on March 7, 1942.

George T. Whitley Collection

Description: The materials in the collection consist mainly of scrapbooks which Whitley kept during his years as an educator in Johnston County. Of particular interest is a now-rare copy of the 1913 Soil Survey of Johnston County. A school lesson plan book from 1916-1917 and numerous clippings relating to World War I (including letters from Johnston County soldiers published in local newspapers), agriculture, taxation, and local government in Johnston County would also prove valuable to the local history researcher.

Description: The H. B. Marrow collection contains photographs, manuscripts, and books relating to his years as school superintendent for Chapel Hill, Smithfield, and Johnston County between 1912 and 1951 and to his work on revising public school laws in North Carolina following the Brown v. Board of Education ruling in 1954.

Reuben Johnson Photograph Collection

Description: The Reuben Johnson Collection contains a very wide variety of photographs. Mr. Johnson was a local photographer from circa 1950 to 1980. He photographed many important events and landmarks in the County. Examples include the Myrtle Airport in Selma, the Annual Singing Convention in Benson and the tobacco markets in Smithfield. He also photographed many local people at work in an area industry. These industries include: K.R. Edwards Tobacco Company, Sylvania Electric Products, Inc., Fieldcrest Mills, and Burlington Industries.

Description: The Sanders-Long- Rose Papers were kept by Ruth Sanders Rose of Smithfield and are associated with several branches of the Sanders family in Cleveland, Pleasant Grove, and Smithfield Townships, Johnston County, NC.

Description: These liquor bottles were used by the Smithfield Dispensary between 1899 and 1902.

William and M. Emmet Robinson Collection

Collection Dates: 1844 to 1891

Description: The William and M. Emmet Robinson Collection contains letters and other papers dating from circa 1844 to 1891. The collection contains letters written from James H. Robinson to his father William Robinson from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as well as letters from William George Robinson while a cadet at West Point. The collection also contains legal and medical papers, obituaries, pamphlets, receipts, and speeches.

William R. Keen Papers

Description: These papers, including chattel mortgages, real estate mortgages, crop liens, and other records of debts owed to the Keen business, apparently were turned over to Congressman Edward W. Pou, an attorney in Smithfield, when William R. Keen's estate was being settled in the early 1930s.
