Retired Flag Drop-Off Box at Land Use Center
Proper disposal of the American flag is a sign of respect. It honors our history, the people who fight to protect our freedom and is an homage to the reverence for our great nation. When a flag is worn, tattered, ripped or soiled beyond repair, it is no longer fit to serve as a symbol of our country and should be retired and disposed of properly.
As part of a new national campaign to support flag etiquette, the County is pleased to announce the installation of a retired flag drop-off box inside the Johnston County Land Use Center in Smithfield. Worn and tattered American flags can be placed in the box by the public in order for them to be properly disposed of. The Veterans Affairs Office and Veteran Service Organization throughout Johnston County will collect the flags in order for the proper retirement ceremonies to take place. The drop-off site is located at 309 East Market Street.
