Irrigation Permits
Johnston County requires all County water customers making connections into the County water system for irrigation systems to obtain an irrigation permit from the Johnston County Inspections Department.
The requirements are as follows:
- A State licensed irrigation contractor must do all work from the outlet side of the meter unless the customer is doing the work at his/her own residence.
- The domestic water supply system and the private irrigation system cannot be interconnected at any point.
- After final inspection is made, an inspection notice will be left at the job site by the Plumbing Inspector indicating the approval or corrections that will be needed. When final inspection is approved call Johnston County Public Utilities for meter installation (919-989-5075).
- Below are some of the items that the Plumbing Inspector will be observing:
- The top of the water line must be a minimum of 12” below grade up to RPZ
- Cut-off valve required to be the first fitting after the meter.
- Reduced Pressure Zone (RPZ) assemblies are required on all systems before any other connections are made and must have certified test results of the RPZ to public utilities within 5 days of completion. You can fax this information to Public Utilities (919-934-0256). RPZ assemblies must also be located inside an approved insulated box.
- The irrigation system must be installed to a separate irrigation water meter. It cannot be installed to the potable water meter serving the residence or business.
- The top of the water line must be a minimum of 12” below grade up to RPZ
