Johnston County EMS prides itself on being a progressive and forward moving provider of Emergency Medical Services. Although we continue to move ahead and provide world class EMS, we value and appreciate our history and those who have laid the ground work of what we have today. To all the volunteers who played a role over the last 40 years - we say thank you.

Prior to the formation of the Johnston County EMS, local citizens provided emergency medical care for their communities through Volunteer Rescue Squads. The first volunteer squads began forming in the late 1950s and early 1960s. Beginning in the late 1980s, the nine independent volunteer rescue squads began undergoing many changes, including advancing to advanced level of care and adding paid staff. In 1995, agencies in Johnston County began operating at the EMT-Paramedic level of care.

In 2008 the Johnston County Commissioners created Johnston County EMS in order to provide services in Benson, Overshot, Kenly, and Micro. We began by operating four ambulances out of four stations. Since then, our agency has grown in leaps and bounds.

In 2012, Johnston County EMS merged with three other agencies and took over the responsibility for providing prehospital care in Clayton, Princeton, and Smithfield, as well as establishing a 24-hour resource in the Thanksgiving community.

In 2017, Johnston County EMS merged with Selma EMS and took over the responsibility for providing prehospital care in Selma, Wilson's Mills, and Pine Level.

In 2021, Johnston County EMS merged with Four Oaks EMS and 50/210 EMS, completing our county-wide EMS system.

We are known for our aggressive, standing-order protocols and our use of new procedures. As Johnston County continues to grow, Johnston County EMS is dedicated to providing progressive, quality service to its citizens.
